‘Axmouth to Lincoln’ (TV)

‘AXMOUTH TO LINCOLN’

Please feel free to comment on my review.

And now we come to the fourth and final episode of Series 2 of ‘Great British Car Journeys’ with Peter Davison and Christopher Timothy! I greatly enjoyed watching the episode when I saw it on TV.

My parents and I had a good time of four weeks of TV entertainment via Channel 4 from October to November 2019, seeing Peter and Chris in their Morgan 4/4 and enjoying some country road trips. 🙂

The Series 2 finale of ‘Great British Car Journeys’ has certainly been a lot of fun! It certainly was better than the previous episode. Although from watching the series from beginning to end, it’s all good. 😀

In this episode, Peter and Chris drive along the Fosse Way through the historical heartland of the car industry to the centre of Roman Britain. This was very interesting to see both on TV and on the DVD.

I like how this latest car journey combined Peter’s love for motoring and Chris’ love for history with a right balance. It was pretty amusing to see Peter being baffled by some of Chris’ historical expertise.

It’s the same with Chris being baffled by Peter’s knowledge of cars. The camaraderie between them is really good, as it should be since they worked on the original ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ series.

The car journey takes them from Axmouth, Devon through the British counties to reach the destination of Lincoln. It’s so amazing that they drove through so many counties in their Morgan 4/4.

This included Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. My Dad wondered whether they would be staying overnight at hotels within four days. Thankfully they did as Peter and Chris revealed in the narration.

It was pretty amusing to hear Peter Davison’s rant about a hotel’s nitpicky-ness regarding stealing coat-hangers. I didn’t think that was a thing. 😀 I certainly would not steal coat-hangers from a hotel.

I enjoyed the stops Peter and Chris made on certain parts of their journey as they were discovering little pieces of Roman history and car history. 🙂 This did include finding the centre of Roman Britain.

Apparently the centre of Roman Britain is a monument in the front garden of married couple Gurj and Pritti. It’s good Peter and Chris met Gurj and Pritti and chatted to them about the monument. 🙂

Chris got the opportunity to try out doing a 1937 driving test. This brought back memories for me of when I passed my driving test back in 2017. I passed my test third time lucky. I told Sarah Sutton this.

I could tell Chris was nervous about doing the test under 1937 conditions. Peter was amusing in playing the part of the car examiner when Chris made some mistakes during that certain driving test.

A highlight of this episode is when Chris and Peter visited Bath and actually went through the Roman Baths. That was so surreal for me! I’ve been to Bath many times and hopefully will go again soon. 😀

I’ve even written a ‘Doctor Who’ story featuring the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Billy set in Bath called ‘The Austen Code’. I wish Big Finish completed the circle by adapting ‘The Austen Code’ for audio. 😀

It was tense when Peter and Chris drove around a roundabout and their car doors nearly opened wide. Clearly the two gents forgot to close their car doors before they set off back on the road again.

It was also intriguing how Peter and Chris’ journey through the Fosse Way had roads closed off and they went on diversions. My parents and I have had experiences like that on country roads as well. 😐

With Peter and Chris driving through Leicestershire, it did put me in mind of me seeing Peter at the ‘Science of the Time Lords’ events in Leicester in 2016 and 2019. I greatly miss those weekends a lot.

It was fun to see Peter getting into an old fashioned bus in the Leicestershire area. He even had a go at tooting the horn in the bus. 😀 A shame that Peter and Chris didn’t get to have a ride in the bus. 🙁

Peter also got the experience to drive a Minx car, which is what he had as his first car years ago. It was surreal to see Peter behind the wheel of the green Minx car and with Chris sitting next to him. 🙂

It did put me in mind of Sarah Jane’s car from ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’. The car could be used for romance too. Not for snogging but for putting your arm around someone as Peter demonstrated.

It was slightly scary when Chris and Peter were forced to stop by an old fashioned policeman in a police car. I did think for a moment that Chris and Peter had travelled back in time in the episode. 😀

Apparently they weren’t driving fast enough according to the policeman. Thankfully they didn’t get arrested here, as the policeman called David was playacting and owned the old-fashioned police car.

Eventually, Chris and Peter arrived in Lincoln and may possibly consider retiring after their long journey. Who knows? They might just do that. They certainly do deserve it after all of that driving. 😀

I like how the episode concluded with Chris and Peter sharing their enjoyment of doing these car journeys together, especially since they’re life-long friends. It’s a nice way to close the TV series off.

I greatly enjoyed Series 2 of ‘Great British Car Journeys’ when I saw it on TV in 2019 and it’s been great to watch it again on DVD in 2021. I did find Series 2 better than Series 1 back in February 2019.

The first two episodes of Series 2 were exciting whilst the third dipped and the fourth was a great and satisfying finale. I did wonder if a Christmas Special would be made for this documentary series.

It has been an immensely satisfying treat to revisit ‘Great British Car Journeys’ on DVD in 2021! When I watched Series 1 of ‘Great British Car Journeys’ back in February 2019, I did wonder if the series would ever get released on DVD. Thankfully it has and I’m amazed to own the series on DVD.

Christopher Timothy and Peter Davison have been immensely enjoyable throughout Series 1 and 2 of ‘Great British Car Journeys’. This is the series that makes you want to go on holiday and visit various parts of the UK. I hope that’ll be the case once my parents and I get to do holidaying again. 🙂

‘Axmouth to Lincoln’ rating – 9/10

‘Great British Car Journeys’ DVD rating – 10/10
