‘ERIC & ERNIE’S CHRISTMAS SHOW 1977’
Please feel free to comment on my review.

The eighth and final Christmas special of the BBC ‘Morecambe & Wise’ series is my favourite and not because it’s the last special from this collection. There are many guest stars in this special episode.
They include Penelope Keith from ‘The Good Life’; Elton John; Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier and John Laurie from ‘Dad’s Army’; Richard Briers and Paul Eddington from ‘The Good Life’ and more. 😀
The episode opens with a spoof version of ‘Starsky and Hutch’ by Eric and Ernie called ‘Starkers and Krutch’. I’ve never seen ‘Starsky and Hutch’ at all, so it was interesting to watch a parody version of it.
There’s a running gag story where Elton John, who’s meant to appear on the show, gets himself lost in the BBC Television Centre from meeting ‘Dad’s Army’ actors in the steam room to falling off into a river.
A group of BBC news presenters including Frank Bough take part in a rendition of ‘There Is Nothing Like A Dame’ from ‘South Pacific’. Angela Rippon makes a guest cameo that you’ll have to look out for.
The highlights of this episode for me include a cute little doggie brought in by Eric which made me go “Aww!” There’s also Penelope Keith in a big play with Eric, Ernie and Francis Matthews about Cyrano.
Penelope Keith wanted to walk down the stairs like a Hollywood movie star with Eric and Ernie. And she did. Well, sort of. It goes out of hand and Penelope Keith isn’t happy once they’re at the bottom.
And of course ‘Eric and Ernie’s Christmas Show’ shouldn’t end properly without the duo singing ‘Bring Me Sunshine!’ at the end. Eric and Ernie dress up as cleaning ladies once Elton John enters at the end.
The ‘Morecambe & Wise’ Christmas Specials from the BBC are great! The collection starts weakly in the first three episodes but it does get better by the time we get to the last three episodes with Des O’Conner, Diana Rigg and Penelope Keith’s guest star performances/appearances with Eric and Ernie.
I highly recommend checking out Morecambe & Wise as a comedic duo for festive offerings at Christmas time. Eric and Ernie’s Christmas Shows were highlights from the 1970s on Christmas Day as well as the Queen’s Speech. You really don’t want to miss out on these fantastic Christmas Specials! 🙂
‘Eric & Ernie’s Christmas Show 1977’ rating – 9/10
