‘THE CANDLELIGHT SUPPER’
Please feel free to comment on my review.

This episode is where Emmet makes his fears about Hyacinth clear. He’s terrified to go out and do a bit of gardening. Eventually, when he’s out in the garden, Hyacinth springs upon him with her singing and invites him to one of her candlelight suppers. Emmet cannot back out as Hyacinth doesn’t listen.
I must say that this episode had the promise of actually seeing what one of Hyacinth’s candlelight suppers were like. I don’t think there’s ever been a ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ episode where we see what goes on during Hyacinth’s candlelight suppers. It’s just as well we don’t see it in this episode. 😀
They are bound to be boring. The candlelight suppers are like one of the secrets kept to conceal the identity of Hyacinth’s family like her son Sheridan and her sister Violet, similar to how Mrs. Mainwaring in ‘Dad’s Army’ was concealed. A shame Violet and Bruce were revealed during Series 5.
Speaking of ‘Dad’s Army’, Stuart Sherwin makes a guest appearance in the episode, playing a man with a dog that dropped its ‘poopsies’ into Hyacinth’s garden. Stuart Sherwin played one of the ARP Wardens in ‘Dad’s Army’. Amazing to find him in this ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ episodes, isn’t it? 😀
This episode also has Rose trying to get Onslow and Daisy out of bed in order to tidy up the house! But Onslow and Daisy are too lazy when they lounge about the house. At one point, Rose decides to tidy the house herself. She soon changes her mind and decides to get picked up at Hyacinth’s house.
Rose has a new lover (as usual) in Mr. Helliwell. There’s also competition for Rose since Boris makes his first and only on-screen appearance in ‘Keeping Up Appearances’. Boris is Rose’s on-and-off lover in the series. Boris and Mr. Helliwell fight outside Hyacinth’s house when they come to pick up Rose.
Dicken Ashworth guest stars as Boris whilst Gregory Cox guest stars as Mr Helliwell. It was funny when Boris and Mr. Helliwell were fighting outside Hyacinth’s house with Rose refereeing between them whilst Hyacinth hid them from sight as she and Richard entertained Liz and Emmet indoors. 😀
There’s also Hyacinth doing one of her musical performances on the piano with singing to entertain and impress Emmet. Hyacinth’s singing is terrible and it gets on Emmet’s nerves. Rose also takes an interest in Emmet for the first time, which would become a running gag in the rest of the TV series. 🙂
‘The Candlelight Supper’ rating – 8/10
