‘DON’T TAKE THE MICKY’

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This is quite a funny episode of ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’ to end Series 3 on. In the episode, the Sgt-Major learns that soldiers with university degrees could get instant promotion to sergeant. Thus, he seeks another opportunity to break up the Concert Party by promoting Gunner Graham to sergeant.

Of course, if Gunner Graham gets promoted to sergeant, he will end up leaving the Concert Party and they will be without their pianist. They also would have to disband and probably get sent up the jungle, which is what the Sgt-Major would want. The Concert Party have to find a way around this. 😐

The Sgt-Major offers to take Graham for a drink. It’s clear Graham isn’t keen to be a sergeant. Even when the Sgt-Major puts the three sergeant stripes on him, he’s still not keen. Meanwhile, the Concert Party find a way to put a ‘Micky Finn’ drug in Graham’s drink when he is with the Sgt-Major.

This is so he will behave badly and not get promoted to sergeant. Rangi Ram and Char Wallah Muhammed help out as well, and they’re joined by Talat Hussain as the barman who provides the ‘Micky Finn’ drug into Graham’s drink. Unfortunately, the drink-giving by Rangi Ram doesn’t go well.

It was funny how the confusion ensued for Rangi Ram, as he was trying to provide the right drink to the Sgt-Major and to Graham. This is because the drinks got switched around a lot on their table. Eventually, the Sgt-Major has the drink with the ‘Micky Finn’ in it, as he instantly goes on a rampage.

I found it funny when the aftermath of the situation is revealed, as Colonel Reynolds and Captain Ashwood are disapproving when relaying the report to the Sgt-Major in their office. Thankfully, Graham uses the situation to get out of being promoted as well as the Sgt-Major out of his bad fix. 🙂

Unfortunately, the Concert Party get into trouble when the Sgt-Major leans that they were behind the ‘Micky Finn’ scheme that was meant for Graham. In a fit of rage, the Sgt-Major gets the Concert Party to repeat that they’re a load of ‘poofs’ before he makes them march outside and do some drills. 🙁

This is before Rangi Ram pops out of a basket and says the Indian proverb to close the episode. I appreciate, as of 2022, ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’ might be offensive in terms of the Sgt-Major calling the Concert Party a load of ‘poofs’, but I also appreciate when this series was made, as I still enjoy it.

‘Don’t Take the Micky’ rating – 8/10
