Quick Movie Review – ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’

SPOILERS ALERT!!!

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Back in 2023, I saw ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ at the cinema on Easter Tuesday! This year, I saw ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ at the cinema on Easter Saturday. I had a great time seeing the sequel to ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ last Saturday. It’s a pleasant film.

I admit I’m not so into the ‘Mario’ franchise as I make out to be, since I hadn’t seen the first ‘Super Maro Bros. Movie’ in a long while. I managed to see the first movie on ITVX in the week building up to Easter Saturday to remind myself what this movie universe is like.

I greatly enjoyed seeing the first ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ again after such a long while and it geared me to see the second film at the cinema. The second film is just about as good as the first film. I wouldn’t say it’s better, but I did have an enjoyable time viewing it.

Apparently, the second film is based on the 2007 video game called ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ and its 2010 sequel. Not that I’ve played any of the ‘Mario’ games on Nintendo, but I’m sure they’re very popular and entertaining to be worth adapting into a feature film as this.

In the second film, Mario, his brother Luigi and their friends of the Mushroom Kingdom venture off into outer space to rescue Princess Rosalina. They’ll have to face off against the villainous Bowser again and his son Bowser Jr. whilst they roam across the galaxy.

I think you’d have to be an avid ‘Mario’ fan to know the references and in-jokes to the ‘Mario’ games and other media whilst seeing the two latest films. But that doesn’t matter. This film is enjoyable to watch, including those that aren’t ‘Mario’ game players like me. 🙂

Chris Pratt returns to voice Mario in the film along with Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Charlie Day as Luigi. Jack Black also returns as Bowser. I must admit, I was expecting Bowser to be on this redemption arc where he was turning from a bad guy into a good guy.

This is especially when he meets his long-lost son Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie. But it turns out, Bowser didn’t end up being a good guy in this film, as he goes from bad to good to being bad again without an explanation. 😐 Somehow, I found this slightly disappointing.

Keegan-Michael Key returns to voice Toad in the film. There’s another new character called Yoshi, a friendly green dinosaur that Mario and Luigi befriend, voiced by Donald Glover (who’s been in films like ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ and ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’).

There’s also Fox McCloud, a red mercenary space pilot, voiced by Glen Powell (who I’ve seen in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’). Apparently, Fox McCloud is the protagonist of the ‘Star Fox’ game series. Not that I’m expecting you to know, as I certainly didn’t when watching this movie.

Princess Rosaline is voiced by Brie Larson, who you may know for playing Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ film series. It was interesting how she turned out to be Princess Peach’s long-lost older sister in this film. 🙂

There’s also Wart, a toad crime boss, voiced by Luis Guzmán, the Honey Queen, who rules the Honeyhive Galaxy, voiced by Issa Rae, and Kevin Michael Richardson returns to voice Kamek, a Magikoopa that serves as Bowser and Bowser Jr.’s advisor and informant in the film.

At the end of the film, there’s a post-credits scene where another princess named Princess Daisy prevents another robbery by Ukiki, a monkey-like thief, voiced by Roxana Ortega in the film. I’m assuming this is setting things up for a third ‘Super Mario Bros.’ film.

‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ has been an enjoyable CGI animated film to check out at the cinema recently over the Easter holidays. I’m glad I saw it recently, especially with seeing the first film beforehand on ITVX. It’s a pleasant film to check out on the big screen.

Would I be persuaded to see a third ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ at the cinema in say, three years’ time? Absolutely! These are very good films to check out, even if you’re not into the ‘Mario’ franchise, which I’m not. I’m sure many ‘Mario’ fans will enjoy this film very much. 🙂

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂
