Quick DVD Review – ‘The Bible’ (2013)

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

For the past few weeks from March to April 2026, my parents and I have been checking out the 2013 TV mini-series ‘The Bible’. I’ve greatly enjoyed checking out this depiction of the Bible stories in live-action. 🙂 It’s been fascinating to see a refreshing take on the Bible.

Over the years, I’ve shared my reviews on Biblical dramatisations, mostly focusing on the Nativity at Christmas, including ‘The Nativity Story’ and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter, including ‘The Passion of the Christ’. 🙂 There are more Bible stories.

This includes Noah’s Ark, the Exodus story of Moses setting the Israelites free from Egypt, and the post-Easter story of Jesus’ disciples spreading the Good News of Jesus’ death and resurrection. But I’ve not had a chance to share reviews on those stories until now. 😐

Thankfully, having seen ‘The Bible’ TV mini-series recently, I can share what each of the 10 episodes are all about. Hopefully, sometime soon the future – and likely at Easter – I can share some in-depth thoughts on each of the 10 episodes in ‘The Bible’ mini-series itself.

I did purchased the 4-disc DVD set of ‘The Bible’ mini-series at Christmas time in 2013, I believe, but never got to see the series in full at the time. Thankfully, in the build-up to Easter, my parents saw the episodes for three weeks on Friday nights, which was great. 🙂

In the first week; we saw the first three episodes, in the second week; we saw the next three episodes, and then in the third week; we saw the seventh to ninth episodes on Good Friday and the tenth episode on Easter Saturday. I’m glad it worked out very well for us. 🙂

The UK version of ‘The Bible’ mini-series is narrated by Robert Powell, who played Jesus in the ‘Jesus of Nazareth’ mini-series in 1977. I’ve not seen the US version of ‘The Bible’ mini-series, but it turns out the US narrator happens to be Keith David, which is intriguing.

In the first episode ‘In the Beginning’, we have the Creation of the World, Adam and Eve, the Fall of Man, Noah’s Ark and Abraham’s story. In the second episode ‘Exodus’, we have the Moses story with freeing the Israelites from Egypt as well as the Ten Commandments.

In the third episode ‘Homeland’, we have Joshua and the city of Jerricho, and Samson and Delilah. In the fourth episode ‘Kingdom’, we have Samuel, Saul, David and Goliath, David being King, David’s lust for Bathsheba, and Solomon building God’s temple in Jerusalem.

In the fifth episode ‘Survival’, we have the Jews enslaved in Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and Daniel and the Lions. In the sixth episode ‘Hope’, we have the Nativity story as well as Jesus being baptised by John the Baptist, and Jesus meeting Simon Peter.

In the seventh episode ‘Mission’, we have Jesus, the miracles he performs and the teachings he shares. In the eighth episode ‘Betrayal’, we have the beginning of the Easter story, including Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, and Jesus’ arrested for his Sanhedrin trial.

In the ninth episode ‘Passion’, we have the crucifixion of Jesus and his burial. Whilst the 2013 ‘The Bible’s version of the Easter story isn’t as brutal as ‘The Passion of the Christ’, it’s still very effective and Diogo Morgado, who plays Jesus, is very good in ‘The Bible’ 2013 series.

In the tenth episode ‘Courage’, we have the resurrection of Jesus, the disciples receiving the Holy Spirit, the Pharisee Paul becoming an Apostle due to meeting Jesus on the Road to Damascus, and John, one of Jesus’ disciples, receiving the revelation of Jesus coming back.

For the most part, ‘The Bible’ 2013 TV series is very good and dramatizes the Biblical stories very well. However, there were some omissions I noticed from watching the Bible stories, particularly in the Nativity and Easter stories that I know well from reading the Bible.

I hope to provide a detailed account of some of those omissions when it comes to sharing my thoughts on the 10 episodes in an in-depth review on ‘The Bible’ 2013 TV series. This is something I’m looking forward to doing when it comes to my Easter blog posts for next year.

‘The Bible’ 2013 TV series has been worthwhile for me and my parents. I’m glad we’ve been able to see it from beginning to end, especially in the build-up to Easter this year. It certainly challenges what I know of the Bible stories over the years and does it in a good way. 🙂

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂
